I’m broadcasting this announcement to put myself on the hook publicly in hopes that the potential shame and embarrassment of not achieving a public goal will provide extra encouragement to maintain habits and exercises.
Goal #1: Lose 20 pounds.
I’ve lost 15 pounds since the start of 2017 through predominately dietary means. I read the 4-Hour Body by Tim Ferriss and adopted some of the ideas for fat loss with measurable success. Ferriss’ book also helped with on-going efforts to undo computer-guy posture, namely an impinged left shoulder and hip. Nothing has helped that more than yoga and I must draw heavily every discipline I’ve studied to further progress.
- Slow Carb Diet
Virtually grain-free, gluten-free, dairy-free, and carb-free. I cook almost all of my meals and budget less than $50/month to dining out. This diet includes a cheat day and I take full advantage of it.
- Yoga and Body-weight Exercises
I am using the spare bedroom in my house as a place to practice yoga, relaxation and body-weight exercises.
- Other small things: early to bed (9pm) early to rise (5am); cold showers to lower body-temp; stretching and breathing after waking;
Goal #2: Be positive and mindful.
- Vagabonding as Inspiration
I am listening to the audiobook version of Vagabonding: An Uncommon Guide to the Art of Long-term World Travel. and am trying to adopt the worldview of a traveler.
- Humbled by a Career Shift
Fortunately for me, when the company I worked for went under, I had the opportunity to transition from the open-source PHP web development arena to the Microsoft .NET/C# framework. Cultivating the open mind of a student will come in handy as I work to become proficient in a new skill set.
- Other small things: audiobooks, podcasts, and non-fiction reading. Tuning out politics, garbage-time Netflix, and other fillers.
